tomato seeds for next year!

ok so i have had a total and utter joke this year with tomatoes i had 8 gardener delight plants and had a total of 5 tomatoes out of them (grrrrrrrrr)

so for next year i have black russian, black cherry, garden pearl, roma, minibel, balconi yellow, free dolmio tomato seed, and micro toms for my window sills.

i also have some gardener delight seeds left from this year that i never sowed!

does anyone grow any of these im not sure as next year there growing will be different i will be growing majority in a green house with a plant of each outside just to compare results

are there any other tomatoes that are good croppers as i was just gutted to take away 5 toms from 8 plant i know that the weather this year was horrible and i was growing outdoors but still a little disheartening!

any advice with taste, size of crop or any other info about these toms for next year

It's been a terrible year for tomatoes here. Mine are in an unheated greenhouse and only just cropping. I don't like garden pearl - it grows well, but I don't like the taste.

I grow Sungold - lovely cherry tomatoes, Gardener's Delight, Bloody Butcher, and Aunty Madge.

what the law of avarage with gardener delights

do they taste nice the kids ate my first few as they were going well and throwing off lots of flowers so let them taste the first few

then the rain came then the dreaded B word set in

they look lovely in pictures mine never really got past the flowering stage though

I always grow Gardener's Delight - its my benchmark tomato. Love the flavour, ripens early because its small and the seeds are dirt cheap if not free. Then I grow other, more unusual sorts as well (especially this year thanks to a special Grape!).

I grow Sungold - lovely cherry tomatoes

If I only grew one tomato it would be Sungold. Good flavour and always a reliable cropper even in the very worst of seasons.

I'm not too impressed with Garden Pearl either. But I must say you have to try Brandywine, a beefsteak tom' the flavour is crackin'.

I would defo recommend you try Gardener's Delight again as they grew and cropped well for me this year in an unheated greenhouse...and they taste fab!!

Sungold were the best for me this year, but other cherry toms that grew well (and ripened well) were Strillo F1 and Bejbino F1 (both from DT Browns).

If you go for all quick maturing toms, a problem next year might be if the weather is too good they may all be finished by end of July.

Other nice toms this year for me have been Black Cherry, Yellow Pear, Golden sunrise, Amish Paste and Ukraine Kibits. They've all cropped okay, but not brilliant and slow to ripen, compared to last year.

I wouldn't grow Roma unless you have a HUGE greenhouse. This year in the tunnel they got to a 6ft bush with sideshoots on the sideshoots......... not to mention on the leaves as well. For the size of plant the crop was small despite drastic pruning of the vegative growth. However the taste was good, a cooking tomato so a bit on the dry side for eating raw.

We've loved Ildi Grape this year, they actually look like a yellow bunch of grapes and taste great. I always grow Tigerella and they've done well. Others slow to ripen at the mo are Roma and Moneymaker. Interestingly, the seeds taken from a Black Cherry tomato given to me by a colleague with an allotment, sown and potted on into that awful Wickes compost then rescued and planted into final pots with B & Q compost, have not grown as little Black Cherry, but are huge fruits the size of apples. Blight has claimed 2 plants, but the other 4 or 5 have plenty of fruit but green as yet. I can't wait to see what colour they ripen to. I've promised myself (again) that I'll grow less plants next year.

I've had success with the majority of my tomatoes this year:

Sungold: sweetest, most reliable and productive, up to 30+ fruits per truss. Still ripening with sweet taste in this cooler weather

Sun Baby: productive, but fruits are on the small side compared to Sungold. Tastes more tart and 'nutty' than Sungold.

Sweet Millions: ripens early, but not as productive as the above two cherry tomatoes. Sweet, intense tomato taste

Shirley: productive, ripens very early but taste depends on weather (ranges from sweet and juicy to thick skinned and unsavory)

Alicante: very productive, but ripens much later than the rest. Good size and nice taste


I will be adding the following next year:
Black Krim, Black Cherry, Matina, Nepal, Floridity

I would give Roma a toss...there are better paste tomatoes out there.

That's a promise which is almost inevitably broken - even if it's only because of side shoots being potted on!
