I usually plant toms and chili three seeds to a 3inch pot. They don't need a particularly deep root system as you can plant them deeper as you pot on.

Dr Hessayon's 'The Vegetable and Herb Expert' tells me that onions are classed as 'other' in the crop rotation and are followed by brassicas. Hope that helps.

No reason why you shouldn't use toilet tubes for any plant - but as toms and chillies do not have deep root runs I would save them for plants that do.

I won't argue with Dr Hessayon! More than the garden is worth! However, due to contraints as to area my onions are eing followed by beans and second crop spinach. I'll let you know how it goes!

If they are harvested in July you could put winter brassicas in - Purple Sprouting Broccoli for example.

You don't need to put tomatoes and chillies in toilet roll tubes Raine. They're not deep rooted and 3" pots will be fine. When you lift your onions you could put some spinach in to give you some winter greens.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

if you are short of pots you could always make some paper pots. There is a great link on here somewhere and loads of people have made them. Am planning on making some myself today for the sweetcorn seeds I still havent planted

Toilet roll "inner tubes" are ideal for deep rooted plants such as beans and peas. However if you have lots of them there is no reason why you can't use them for other things. I spent the other weekend sawing up wrapping paper "inner tubes" into suitable lengths to sow things in.
