  • Pink beans?

I picked these up at the HSL stand at Garden Organic's Potato Day this year and they had been left there by someone and they had no variety on them.

So I grew them. I didn't even remember what colour they were.

When I started harvesting them, I was surprised to see a dusty pink colour mature bean and they are all like this.

They look just like 'Pink Beans' also called habichuelas rosadas
Link to them Welcome to Zürsun Idaho Heirloom Beans - scroll down to just above Pinto.

The pods are just like Borlottis, and get really dark when dry - and they were a climber.

Anyone got these or grown them before? Anyone pick them up at Potato Day?

Just curious - I'm going to bulk these up next year as I now have quite alot - oh yeah, they were very productive! The best result of any of my beans this year.

Haven't even eaten one yet. I only had about 5 seeds to start with...so I usually bulk them out first.

They look quite meaty though. hurrah!

And because the photo was taken indoors this evening, they don't look as dusky pink as they actually are.

Add some tomato sauce and they will look like baked beans...

Hope you don't really mean "meaty"

Not about your beans, but on that site, they have a variety called Cranberry, which is a bit confusing because I had some Serbian climbing benas [or that's what they were called] which look exactly the same, and a variety called Cranberry Pole Bean.....And their Tongues of Fire Bean are actually Borlotti beans...
I'm not sure who to believe now

Yes - I mean meaty. Heavily fleshed. Good enough for a nice fat chilli.

By coincidence I made a chilli tonight!- but I'll never be able to grow enough beans to dry my own So you'd rate these pink beans as likely contenders for the chilli stakes (not steaks!). Hope you can identify them,

Absolutely. I'm taking some to HSL this week to see if they are the same as one variety of their pink beans so we shall see.

Why could you never grow enough to dry your own? Last year I sowed a bag of soup beans [500g from Asda] in two long 1m wide beds, and just left them to grow, shoved a stick in where one or two were starting to climb and when the pods were all dry - collected them and got 5.5 kg of dry beans. I'm still eating them! And I gave half away, used quite a few for seeds this year and still have about a kilo and a half to use.

Last year, maybe I could have but this year I can count the number of edible beans on my fingers and toes. If I so much as hear the word "Glut" again I'm going to emigrate!
But I'll try again next year - as growing protein has to make sense
