Overwintering onion sets Radar

Hi, I planted out a load of these during the week but still have lots left. I wonder can I hold these over and plant them out next spring for a later summer crop? They are radar. If I plant them next spring would they keep better than ones that over-wintered? Or is long-term storage more to do with the type than when they were planted?

You'd be better to get them planted. They won't keep for planting later.

Why can't you put them in over the winter in the same space that they would go in the spring?

I haven't even planted mine out yet. Yikes! Going to put the whole lot into trays and let them root and plant them out in a week or so.

Thanks. There would be more than we could use to be honest if I planted them all. I'm also thinking it would be good to have some spring planted sets as they store better long-term.
Will probably give them away and get some soring types in the New Year.

Think of onion rings, curries, soups....chop and freeze them. I have eyes bigger than both my brains and plot. That said, I have given lots away. There's nothing quite like your mama telling you to go fetch an onion from down the road, or Aunty Sue telling you she wants that one

I never ever have too many onions. I start using them as soon as they are big enough [the size of a large egg] and carry on whilst the others are all growing. If there were too many I'd make onion marmalade.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I've learned a lot in the first season, especially about balance - how much to sow and how much we use. Lots of my overwiintered onions are going off now and I didn't sow any in spring. Freezer is too small to freeze onions, peas, beans, tomatoes, peppers, raspberries, rhubarb etc etc etc And i simply dont have to time to make up recipes and preserves that i would love to. The bag of sets I bought is very generous. A nice problem but no point planting them all if i cant use them. Plus my plot is only 10 m x 10 m.

Can you trade them with someone for something that you want? Better to give them away than let them go to waste!

still plant them,as you can cut and freeze them ready to use at a later date,thats what i have done,then you will not need so many summer ones to store,it sort of hedges the bets,and is handy having some ready prept,
ahh,just read about freezer space,chutney springs to mind with any spare onions,also can you exchange the fully grown onions next,with other peeps,or simply have joy at giving another a gift,

if they are owed to you,then get a note pad and write it up,then you will not have any quarms about asking for help when needed,if you wish,place book inside a freezer bag,then freeze,job done,
