It's a beautiful day outside, so i thought i'd go & take some photos of my newly aquired allotment.
While i was there, i asked a very industrious bloke for some advice about the site as i am new to all this. He was very helpful & even came over to look at the plot with me. He told me about the chap that had worked it before, looked at the soil, the weeds, the plants (he lifted some existing leeks for me) that were still in there & quite frankly, he was envious (in a nice way though). He gave lots of advice, so now i am less anxious about what to do & how to do it.
I can't wait to get going!

I go my 1/2 allotment last year & share with Roy who is a great source of info & puts me to shame as he is 80+ with a dicky heart but grows the most amazing veg.

Everyone on the site are really nice & helpful & one lady works at the same school as me but we had never met at work

Allotments are smashing places to spend your spare time. Always talk to the people there and never be too shy to ask questions - no matter how small. This is the way we all learn and in a few years you will be giving the newcomers advice.

I have never met an unsocial person on any allotment, if they are busy they will tell you to come back though! But, from new to old, everyone is there to give advice because a productive allotment is a happy allotment.

Having given up work 5 years ago have have my children, I really missed the banter and social side of work. But having an allotment has been great, ours is like a little community. We have such a diverse group of people, some of which have had plots on the site for over 50 years!!!!! I'm sure you'll find plenty of people to help out over the coming months when the site no doubt becomes busier. But beware, they will all give you different advice and techniques! The best thing to do is pick out the bits that sound like they will work for you and take it from there.

I remember last spring asking two guy's how to plant potatoes. The result was a friendly argument between the two for the best part of an hour. I ended up on the floor rolling with laughter to see two grown men undoing and redoing what the other had done as soon as their attention was distracted. I can't even remember who won. Neadless to say I'll be planting my own spuds this year.

So welcome to the world of allotmenteering, for every hour of work you put in this year you will be rewarded 10 fold in the years to come.
              Good Luck

Congratulations Huxley, now for the hard work Just remember what we tell every one little & often.

I think you'll find most folks are more than happy to help newcomers, afterall it's in their interest. If you get dis heartened & give up, they get loads of weeds all over their plots, try reminding them of this in a nice way, they'll soon be round to help
