  • Edible Leaves?

    Hello Everybody,
I am very new to GYO so I could do with some advice please.
Can you eat the leaves of all radish, turnip and beetroot etc or just the ones mentioned in descriptions as being ediblr?
I noticed in my seed catalogues - after 2 years of both good and bad veg production I realised that seed variety is an important factor and so have become addicted to seed catalogues (I squeal with delight and hubby groans when one turns up in the post!).
    Many Thanks in advance
    Sue

Hello Sue and welcome. We're all addicted to seed catalogues here so you're in good company
You can eat any of those leaves - they won't poison you! If you want to eat them raw then pick them when small and young - picking a leaf from each plant won't harm the root.
I find radish can be a bit bristly but the other's are fine and can be cooked like spinach too.

Sue, the next thing you'll notice is that sometimes the seed cats lie (Xmas potatoes, being one)

          Thank you all

For the advice. And yes I had noticed that seed cats quite often contradict each other. However, I have begun to see this as 'the throwing down' of a gauntlet - me (and Google) verses sometimes mis-leading catalogues. Bring it on is what I say - I am at an age where I seem to enjoy existing in a haze of confused happiness whenever I think of home growing.
          Regards
          Sue

Are there any leaves you can't eat? (I know rhubarb) Me and the kids like the leaves ontop of celery so I don't buy the trimmed ones anymore. Also started grating brocolli stalk into our salads which is delicious
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!

I wouldn't want to eat tomato or potato leaves, don't know whether they're poisonous or not, they just don't appeal!

Welcome Muppet (feels a bit rude saying that :-) :-) )...
Have to agree with northepaul, beetroot leaves are lovely in salad... For stirfrys, try Swiss Chard and turnip leaves are also edible I believe
                    ... and cabbage obviously
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

                    ...utterly nutterly

Thanks for all the help - at least these might brighten up our salads rather than go into compost.
