Which Raspberry Canes?

I'm thinking it's time to replace my raspberry canes on my allotment.

I was planning on moving the existing one's but they didn't do very well this year (or last year!) so I've decided to leave them where they are for now and start a new patch elsewhere.

Has anyone got any recommendations please?

Ones that have a long cropping season, from summer to autumn. T&M had some on offer. A continuity collection.

I like the seemingly easier maintenance of the autumn varieties too.

Double points weekend at my local WV so I may have a look tomorrow and see what they have if no-one is massively enthusiastic about a particular variety.

Although no-one seems to like summer fruiters, i planted this morning ten long cane tulameen summer fruiting raspberries, they were £15.99 delivered.

I must be the only person not to get on with Autumn raspberries. I got rid of the Autumn Bliss I had a couple of years ago as they never seem to come to much. I think I couldn't keep them moist enough at the crucial time as the fruits were forming. Yes they had a good deep mulch. So now I have Malling Jewel and Glen Something. Don't know which Glen as was given one to start with by a fellow plot holder and he couldn't remember which one. Malling fruits first and is between 4 and 5 feet tall. Fruits are quite small. Glen is a much more vigorous grower, easily 6 feet, fruits later and larger fruits. Both I find tasty compared with the Autumn Bliss which I found tasteless. Don't seem to have raspberry beetle so not a problem. Hope that's of help.

I have summer fruiting only - Glen Ample. Smooth spineless canes, large tasty fruits. Salivating just thinking about it.

Autumn bliss were amazing this year, and cropped from beginning of august, (think the weather confused them). I had previously had summer ones but they didnt do well. I suppose it depends where you live too! They are a bit anti-social, I have dug a lot out this year as they tended to go a bit wild and throw up shoots everywhere. The kids LOVE them so I did leave a few in just for them to pick at .

My current garden (aka My Parent's garden) had a mix of Glen Ample, Glen Moy and Polka. The summer ones always seemed to product the bigger crop.

For the new garden I've ordered 20 tulameen canes (on offer for about £16) and an assortment of autumn ones (Autumn Bliss, All gold, Polka).

If you have space why not a 2 different types then you should have a long cropping period?

I love my rasp range - I have Glencoe for early, 2 summer fruiting and Joan J for autumn. I'm overloaded with rasps and suckers to give away to people. They are all potted up now ready for pressies.

To me raspberries are the best soft fruit - and I wouldn't be without either summer or autumn fruiting ones. I wouldn't have yellow ones again though - they just seem to taste of sweet water.

Someone on our site has yellow ones. Just don't look very tempting!

My dog likes the yellow ones, but I don't: sweet water is a good description, plus I can't tell they're ripe until they've gone over

we have the tulameen and joan j lates,i treat one lot as summer fruiting by cutting out cropped stems and tying in the new ones,the others i cut to the ground each november,so we then get loads from mid july onwards,we picked our last lot just after bonefire night,and this rubbish summer did not affect the flavour,it seems that the slower ripening times added to the flavour,so i prefer the autumn types,....and my new damson tree is due to arrive tomorrow, yipee,everything is ready as the sun came out yesterday,i know,sun,thats the big yellow thing that appears in the sky,rumour has it ,every year,well most years anyway....

It was a beautiful sunny day here too yesterday, Buffs; I lovely reminder of what that big, warm... yes warm, round thing in the sky is!

The local GC didn't have a massive selection of autumn varieties so good ol' Autumn Bliss it was; half price so 10 canes for £10. Not too bad at all!

I was tempted by the spineless one's so I may end up popping back and getting some of those too!
