I prefer to plant mine direct as I've found that if I put in modules in the greenhouse first that they put up too much greenery which then gets hit badly in the cold of winter. If I plant them straight out then they seem to be stronger and although I often don't see anything much above the surface I'm pretty sure that the root system is starting up.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

There are some types which in theory you can plant in the spring but I've tried them and they aren't very good, plant now, you'll do much better

I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

Mine went in direct about a month ago. No signs of any growth on the surface yet. Might sow some more just in case.

You don't really want it up yet!

Mine doesn't usually show til Feb. Stop worrying. They probably haven't put it in deep enough.

Thanks hun! I feel reassured now
Should I suggest they mulch theirs over a bit?

                        Nope.

I would never suggest anything to a fellow plot holder. Unless they asked.

Could you have a quiet word with mine? It's 4" tall, planted in modules in Oct (well, we had a wet day for Garden Club, so it was a good indoor job)

You could have a word with mine too... I planted 5 varieties directly into the ground a few inches down in early October and one variety (one of the one's I saved from last year's crop) is growing like crazy!

Most of the rest is showing now, even the Elephant Garlic which was much deeper.

I will try and remember to do mine later next year but I think I got carried away when we had a couple of sunny days last month!

Put mine in last week which was a month earlier than the previous years, directly into big ridges as we are on clay and they are at the bottom end of a sloping bed.
