None of mine is coming up either - it must be a local thing, or maybe our pigeons are particulary fond of garlic?

Planted mine during the last week of October and had green shoots appearing at the weekend. Direct sowing covered with fleece.

I put mine in 10 Oct, with my onions the following week. The onions are beginning to show, but no garlic yet. One clove had become dislodged though, and was showing roots, so I'm sure all's well below ground. I don't fleece garlic or onions, they just have to cope.
Some cloves I 'missed' and were left in a flower pot, just loose, have sprouted roots due to the rain. I really need to get those planted somewhere.

Mine went in a month ago now, in pots, quite deep. No shoots so far, but not too worried yet

Garlic is happiest in the cold, so my advice would be - if you have not already planted your garlic cloves do so asap. In order to form a head made from good sized cloves garlic needs to have at least 6 weeks in the ground when the temperature does not rise above 10 degrees centigrade and about 10 days below 4 degrees. In fact there's no harm in planting as early as mid September. If you plant too late you will find that although it grows when you harvest it there will be one small bulb that has not subdivided into cloves. However this is still edible and can also be kept as seed for next season's crop.

A genuine question that may sound silly but how does the clove know if it's in the ground or a module?

I wold have thought that as long as its roots aren't constricted it couldn't care less.

It doesn't know whether it is in the ground or not I guess, and as Veggie says couldn't care less - as long as it gets nutrients, water, and room to grow and the correct conditions then it will happily grow in the ground, a module or a pig's ear come to that.

The pig would actually be happy methinks as its' logic will be - ahh, this garlic will not be ready to harvest till next autumn - well past my appointment with the abattoir.

.............and the fungiscidal properties of garlic will stop the pig from getting ear canker! The nice warm environment would also promote growth of the garlic!

So in other words, a symbiotic relationship between the pig and the garlic will be achieved.

My question is - I have fleece available, to cover or not?
