Garlic and autumn planted japanese onion sets are supposed to be quite hardy. I have always found that I get better crops by growing them under glass/polythene though.

Haha I'm a Northerner, albeit AWOL from Yorkshire! You'll find me in the garden or down my allotment (as of last week when I finally got hold of it to work on) in my shorts and t-shirt

I don't know what it is about Southerners but they seem to think they will melt in the rain? :O

I'll cover them up with fleece!... My garlic that is.

I have just found my bag of Elephant Garlic, There are 4 whole bulbs that i should have planted weeks and weeks ago!
Will they be ok if i plant them out now or should i wait until feb now?
My plot is on a slope so doesn't really get waterlogged and i'm right on the coast but we do get frost.
        Thanks for any advice!

several of my cloves have sprouted and are now approx 1 inch tall.

I planted them in 2 big pots around 5 - 6 weeks ago.

            They are in the greenhouse.

              Thank you for the advice!
Well i have broken up the bulbs and now have 56 cloves to deal with! I have no green house but do have a 3 tier blow away. I have had a look for pots and may have 56 but there is noway i have enough space in the house but may be able to come up with something as long as they don't need much light until they start sprouting.

I had some 'normal' garlic in planters in the back garden that got dumped in there when the baby carrots which came out a few months ago. To be honest until i was nosing in the shed for pots i had forgotten about them and they have sprouted roughly 1 inch tall and they are out side.

Hi - just wondering how people's garlic is coming along? I planted a few rows in the tunnel in early November and only a few are showing above the surface. I seem to remember that last year they were well up and that was outside.
                Thanks!

I planted mine out in the garden (some in a raised bed). Not a sign of them yet. I think they are sulking. Last year they were definitely starting to come through about this time and we subsequently had a great crop (first ever). The beds are so wet it looks as though they may rot.

I've got big shoots on three varieties I put in early, but my Early Purple Wight has yet to show it's face - all in the polytunnel - maybe I should rename it not so early PW.

All of mine is up, in modules in the GH. The slowest is the Elephant garlic, but that is a different animal anyway!

Mine's not showing yet in the outside beds but wasn't this time last year either so I'm not worried. Fortunately the bed (although wet) never gets water logged so fingers crossed.
