as we are now on our fifth really cold day on the trot,i have moved my tatties indoors to stop us losing them as we did 2 years ago,we had left them in the shed and the temp went down and stayed at -16 for several weeks.as they forecast this winter to be the coldest in living memory,i only have leeks and parsnips still in the ground and the rest in the freezer,so i should be able to just sit it out,so what will the more energetic gardeners do to prepare their plots for the winter?..

I'm no 'energetic gardener' or have much experience of winter growing so probably cant help much. But I think some of the recent newspaper stories of 'worst winter ever' style impending doom may be over the top. Its cold at the moment, but apparently the forecasts used by energy companies are predicting mainly mild, wet & windy for NW Europe Forecasters Predict More Mild Winter for Europe
Maybe crossing your fingers is about as energetic as you need to get?

as i am in the throws of re-aranging my plots,i only have over wintering onions, garlics, strawberries, few herbs, and soft fruit, and a few spuds not worth bothering with, they will be dug up as i dig the ground in the spring,in the sheds are potatoes in bags, although they have been wormed, they still give us food,i am concidering weather to bring them home,as the other year when it went down to minus 15,we lost them,as did others on our site, but where to keep them, maybe the attic, like a few years agobut get them back in the shed after the wose has past,to try and delay them sprouting to soon, sigpicAnother nutter ,wife, mother, nan and nanan, love my growing places, seed collection and sharing, also one of these

to TWO SHEDS,dug out some parsnips for sunday lunch, the ground was frozen to about 4ins down but warmer today...to PMW,mild european winters can mean bl.... cold, have you ever been outdoors in some of the european countries mid winter,i have and it can mean 10-12ft drifts and -20deg being the norm...brrrrrrrr...god forbid, all the gas and power suppliers would be retiring to the carribean with their illgotten gains, last one out switching off the lights.....some things never change..
