  • The "Wrong" colour vegetables

There are purple carrots, orange cauliflowers, black tomatoes, blue potatoes etc, etc.
I can think of lots of reasons why you may choose to grow something a bit different but tell me in what way you think coloured veg are preferable (or not) to standard varieties.
Part of me is tempted to grow something with shock value but if its tasteless there's not much point!! Thank you for your time and consideration

I have grown white carrots really to try to makethe point that colour, if it is part of the criteria for judging vegetables, should properly read colour appropriate to the cultivar. The variety I grew - White Satin has a tremendous skin finish, much superior to many orange cultivars yet is ignored by vegetable judges. Really unfair as it has a terrific carrot taste as well.

I think the purple potatoes I grew had more antioxidants in. And they were purple. Whats not to like? Carrots were not orginally orange and we've got stuck in the groove of growing orange ones, its good to try something different. The white ones sound great. If you're going to the effort of growing your own veg, you may as well go for something that is harder to get hold off.

Thanks Ap. So they look good, taste good but don't win prizes. No problem for me there The redoubtable Carrot museum says White Carrots

I grew mine in stations in the same compost mix as my other show carrots and they grew dead strait with a beautiful white skin. The white satin shown on that website will have been grown directly in the soil so won't look so good but will probably taste even better

I grew purple spuds a few years ago - can't remember the variety - the yield was dreadful so I cooked the whole lot up when we had friends over for dinner including an eight year old who I thought would love freaky food.

She cried and wouldn't eat anything at all because of the weird potatoes....

I grow purple carrots, mange tout, tomatoes, potatoes, etc as they contain more anthocyanins/antioxidants. You are supposed to get your plate as mixed in colour as you can...so a bit of orange, a bit of green, a bit of purple/blue/black.
i actually prefer purple and yellow carrots to orange.

I like trying things that are different and find it brightens up the plate. Also freaks out dinner guests which is always good fun - my mum and MIL were very dubious about purple carrots the other week and claimed not to have realised they were carrots OH likes different things too and it's a way of getting him a least slightly interested.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My last free postage order to T&M delivered today including my packet of White Satin. It was even free because of an offer they had on at the time so well chuffed.

I grew purple podded mangetout this year, purely because I have trouble spotting green pods among the foilage! Shan't be bothering again though - they were bitter. Taste is by far the priority!

I've grown various coloured tomatoes to see which I preferred, but the thought of orange cauli or purple carrots just makes me cringe. I think I deal with the concept of different coloured fruits more easily than different coloured veg - especially when the 'correct' colour for the veg in question has already been established in my mind.

I've grown white beetroot before, it tasted equally as good as the red didn't stain my salads, but it did confuse the other half into boiling it and mashing it with butter and milk instead of spuds.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
