It's where you plant whatever fell out of the seed packet into your pocket at the end of a session at the lottie.
the technique is to find a clear patch, thrust your hands into your pocket piching the very bottom of your pocket between your thumb and forefinger then rapidly pulling your pockets inside out repeatedly

I'd only find a grotty tissue and a half-sucked peppermint - neither of which grow well

Last year I did this with the contents of the bottom of my seeds bags, it worked well but I wish I had sown into trays so that I could transplant into the right places.

Anyway - it's not long now - the randomness commences on Saturday morning.

I'm getting quite excited for you Zaz - I want to get sowing too
I'm going to gather up some random seed packets, stir them up and see what happens too. Nothing ventured - but they won't be in pretty packets, I'll put them all in a jar and take a pinch out each time-- Well, look at that - I've just devised a plan of action as I typed

It's pretty similar to the polyculture approach here which you might fund of interest:

                    http://www.permaculture.org.uk/sites...ourbooklet.pdf

although they plant out "some" as modules which need that head start and then scatter others as groundcover.

There were also two examples and mixes in one of the chapters in the "Gaia's garden" book (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1...F8&me=&seller=) although I can't remember off the top of my head - they were very much "throw and grow"...

                    Have fun!

Ok so I've been sowing a packet diligently once a week, into pots, trays and all just called 'random'. And they are looking like the most successful seeds this year so far!

We will be starting to plant the first ones in the plot very soon, under some frost protection. I just want to sow the rest of the plot with Gert lines of mustard, and then the randoms will be going into the C rows.

It's all very exciting! Having some seedlings that are actually growing and all in the greenhouse.

I think Madame Weather chooses whether the seed germinates: in this house, not much going on yet at all.

I've thought about Zaz's mixed beds: I can't do it. It would create problems with spacing, for one. If I'm getting beans germinating right next to carrots, say, then the beans are going to completely swamp the little orange things.

I'm interested to see photographic results though: she always shows us something interesting, whether it works well or not

Carrots and snoops aren't in the mix. I always sow those direct. They will all be getting about 6 inches spacing - in zigzag fashion, no matter what. So with any luck, smaller things might just grow next to bigger things! And the bigger things can grow over the Gert mulch if needs be.

Photos will come, might take some later of the seedlings as they are - and then once in the ground.

Zaz, have you made a note of what you sowed and what's come up? In case something is inhibited by something else, and doesn't do well at all. Like anti-companion planting

I have written down what's in each packet but I have only done that for future reference if needs be. It's locked away in the cupboard. The whole point is that it's random! What gets put in is what's next in the tray or pot or what's ready to go in.

First 3 rows went into the Gert C beds last night, with green manures sown along each of the canes. Enviromesh over the top to reduce windburn as the wind comes across out plots and they need some protection.
