  • Marrows and squash

I've germinated some Marrow and squash seedlings. One minute there was nothing in the pots but in the space of about 5 days they've shot up to between 4 and 6 inche high with two leaves on top. Thing is what do I do with them next. They're in the dining room at the moment and I need to move them but will they be OK in an unheated greenhouse or should I put them out in the little one I have at home which I can put a tiny parafin heater in?

An unheated greenhouse will be fine Nicky. I have marrows germinating outside and pumpkins in pots in my unheated greenhouse.

Just keep an ear open for any frost forecasts and cover with fleece or bring them indoors again. I doubt we should get any severe frosts now - I`m in the south west.

agree with pippin, shouldn't be a problem as long as you listen for frosts.

Mine are outdoors in the day and in the unheated greenhouse at night. Toughens 'em up a bit!

Don't you just love marrows and squashes? They grow so big so quickly. Make sure that once they have germinated you give them plenty of light, they don't need really high temperatures. Pot them on when the roots have filled their present pots or cells until they are in 4" pots. Gradually harden them off by standing outside during the day and bringing under cover nighttimes. You should be able to plant outside within the next 3 or 4 weeks. Good luck.
