I prefer to grow chillies as biennials; the hotter types especially don't give much of a crop in year 1 and in year 2 fruiting starts much earlier (May onwards usually) and is more plentiful. My current favourites are Thai Dragon and Hot Lemon a.k.a. Lemon Drop. Both produce strong, good sized and well shaped plants, which overwinter better than most. Both produce fruits which are quite hot but have excellent flavour and versitility. Thai Dragon is red on maturity, Hot Lemon yellow on maturity, and as the same suggests, has a distinct citrus flavour. Both varieties freeze well, up to a year with no loss of heat or flavour.

Apache for me, very easy to grow and over winter - slight kick but not too much. Looks wise if I had to choose though it'd probably be Bolivian Rainbow - a right stunner!

For ease of crop in one season, reasonable heat and reasonable flavour, I don't think you can beat "Etna". "Lemon Drop is another great one, and I've successfully overwintered plants 3 or 4 years in a row now, with first fruit typically showing in April/May.

My mostest favourite though, is Fatalii... Such a shame I've only ever managed to harvest about 6 ripe fruit in any one year! It's seriously hot, but seriously fruity as well, and makes a great Hot Sauce! Despite multiple attempts, I've never managed to overwinter it successfully... So I'm going to have another go this year

For pickling, I'm very fond of "Aji Crystal"... Flavour actually best when green, but hotter when red

For ornamentals... Black Pearl or Purple Tiger

What would be your best tips for overwintering? Where do you keep your plants?

I overwintered an orange bell last year which did well, but that was the only one that survived out of about 7 various types of chilli plants.

Another vote for the habaneros here. Lovely flavours and different heats. Like the chocolate habs for fruity hot heat. White habs are easy to grow as are orange. Try peach & mustard too...

Another thumbs up for yellow fatali - great heat & flavour.

Also recommend French Piment d'Espelette, they make great hot paprika when dried. On the whole we go for flavour and heat - you can always use less of a chilli when cooking...

I love chillis, any type or hotness.

Usually I have some growing on the kitchen windowsill but I don't have a clue what they are - unless "supermarket" is a brand

This year though I am growing Vampire for a change and my brother has some Ghost on the go... Eek!
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Birds eye. Buy them at Morrisons for £1 a bag of 10-15, save the seeds, dry them, sow them, plant them. Badda Bing Badda Boom! Grown!
