Maybe I have money to squander then.... I didn't think that the tatties at my local garden centre were that expensive- £3 for 2 kilos. Whereas at B&Q their "special offer" of 2 for £6 wasn't that good cos their bags are less that 2 kilos in weight. Robbing barstewards :O I might wait and see what Wilkies have in store......

wendy you are a star thank you for the info, last year one of my posts was published in the gyo magazine and i was sent a £10 t&m voucher which had to be used before the end of 2012 so i ordered some seeds again on a freepost weekend (thanks vc for that heads up ) when the seeds arrived there was a £5 voucher in the envolope which i have just used so 20 lady chritl seed spuds are on there way to me at a cost of diddly squat woooooooooooot

I brought a couple of seed potato bags from morrisons £1 for 5 seeds, but I don't anticipate planting loads and I'm using them t o break up my new allotment soil... today they only had charlotte and roosters, but i'm keen to try lots of different varieties so might try poundland/wilkos to check out the other varieties. i'm impressed morrisons was cheaper than wilko's this year.

I got another few seed spuds y'day, Asda Finest. I ate the spuds, after slicing off the "eye" end. The ends have been planted in pots of compost in the unheated gh (it got to 14c yesterday).

I usually do buy seed potatoes, as well as replanting my own saved spuds, but this year I have challenged myself not to (to see how successful it is).

My earliest, and usually biggest, crops are from the volunteers left in the soil, or from peelings put in the compost heaps.

You must be aware of blight though: the spores survive on LIVING plant tissue, ie volunteers. If you've had blight, make sure you dig up and destroy all volunteers on your plot.

I tried that last year and had a very poor crop from them, (the other varieties I grew from bought seed were fine) I think they must spray them with something
So this year I've gone back to buying a small pack of 'proper seed' from Wilko, as it was a false economy...

That's my kind of seed potato, have never used anything else but supermeercat ones. No problems thus far.
