  • Price of seed potatoes

I happened to visit our local garden centre last week and they were putting out the seed spuds. I was quite suprised at the cost at £3.99 for 2kg's. I heard that the price may rise due to the wet year we've had but still very suprised. I would go to spud day at Stonham but they charged £1.50 entrance last year and by the time I drive the 30 miles and I only go for a small amount of new spuds I am weighing the cost. To go or not to go. I haven't seen the price per spud but last year it was 12p each. Pays if you want alot of em, interesting morning though. I could always get my friend who is a member and helps there to get me a few I suppose. I even looked in catalogues and they are even more pricey. Then add postage. I do use the Kings seed programme on our site but I have felt they were always pricey. What are we to do. Still if thats the only concern I have this year then it will be a good one. Good luck to all readers/GYO's for the coming season and lets hope it's a good, drier and warmer year.

If you're a real cheapskate, just plant the ones from the supermarket

              I do.

Why are there no seed swaps in south Wales?
                Nearest is Bristol!

Why is south Wales so poorly represented by suppliers and events?

I went to check whether my local supplier had his in yesterday and he told me that not only would there be a price rise this year but that he was being limited as to how many he could have. Many are still in the ground - "rotting nicely", for example he said there wouldn't be any Lady Crystl from his supplier. Depending on the weather there might be some next week for me, fingers crossed. I only do earlies and second earlies because of the blight so the supermarket option isn't the best solution for me.

On an even more depressing note I've been told of farmers being limited as to how much barley they can buy to feed now. Many haven't got their winter corn in and there is no spring wheat or barley seed to be had for the proverbial love nor money at the mo.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

That's bad news marchogaeth doesn't bode well for food prices.
I only came to see what I could start sowing now but now I all depressed.

You can still plant them, just dig them up earlier (before they become big and "maincrop"), before blight hits you
