you'd be surprised at how easily some out of date seeds can germinate so its worth a go.....

My first lot that germinated are still in their pots but have had to be moved to the conservatory under a plastic cover with ventilation by day and an extra layer of fleece at night

My friend always plants his seeds in January, while I plant in March. Our tomatoes crop generally at the same time, although often mine begin to crop/ripen earlier than his. What's the benefit of sowing early?

i usually sow in March too, but today I've sowed 4 Red Alert and 2 seeds from the T&M mixed freebie, http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...bie_69360.html

so I can compare with March sown ones.

Thought there might be some way to group the freebies either by slight colour difference, or shape or size, but no, they all look the same, so it's pot luck which two I've sown.

The benefit (for me) is that lovely feeling that something is growing And also (for me) I have lights, and later, greenhouse heating, so should be able to keep them growing steadily up until it's time to plant them out in the tunnel

I planted some plum tomatoes yesterday as they seem to take so much longer. I planted San Marzano and also a large random shaped one that again seemed to be slower last year - marmalade.

They are in my new heated propagator with my chilli and pepper seeds which is in my greenhouse. I will sow my other tomato varieties in a couple of weeks.

I don't think there is any benefit to the fruit but it gives the grower a good feeling.....................a little snippett from the opening post:

*naysayers saying they will wait to sow is great, but start your own thread please - this is for those who want to get a few plants started off early. Thank you.

                            • Feeling inspired, I've just sown Gardener's Delight, Black Cherry and Moneymaker - also have attempted to root some suckers from last year's Bejbino as they grew so well.

                              • I sowed 3 red alert and 3 tropical ruby on new years day. They are all approx 2" high and true leaves are developing nicely.

I can't believe how fast they grow, in comparison to the habaneros that are sat along side them....
