The 2013 Early Tomato Sowing Thread

Gotta re-pot mine this afternoon (all 15 germinated but one got over-watered while I was away) but I also got a newly germinated one today .......



First of the three varieties I saved seeds from while in Madeira just waiting on those either side to pop up (he said with great optimism) & then will send a load of each into the VSP's

My Roma have erupted, San Marzano have just been sown in the heated prop

Moneymaker are growing rapidly now and the marmande and garden delight that I sowed last week have germinated too.
I'll probably let the seedlings grow on for a bit and eventually weed out the weaker ones. I'll leave two of of, 6 plants should be more than enough.

All my tomatoes have now been potted on. Most of them now have 3 sets of true leaves. The peppers are a bit slower and have about 2 sets of leaves. I lost a few plants due to damping off but still have plenty.

I potted moneymaker seedlings on today into peat pots (although they look more like cardboard to me). The other seedlings I grew in those tiny propagator things you get with a pack of seeds from the poundshop. It dawned on me when they were growing that it'd be difficult to transplant them, and ultimately I tried to and it doesn't work. I won't be using them again.
I'm not sure what I'll do with the plants yet, whether they'll go in plastic pots, a bag of compost or the ground or how many I'll keep.



The windowsill has been occupied all winter. I'll give it a good clean and some paint in summer.

You'll probably only be able to tell when they fruit. Marmande will be large and maybe ridged, minibell will be a cherry tomato I guess and sungold sounds like a yellow variety?

I didn't bother labelling any of my early sown plants. They're all going in the tunnel and being eaten by us, and they're all cordon/vine types, so it doesn't matter which is which... The later sowings are all labelled because some will be going to school for the plant stall

my tomato's are growing to. when is the best date to plant them out and do they need anything like feed or anything else i am new to growing

Of mine that made it,are at the lottie,sitting comfortable at the mo,their home is double glazed,they sit on bubble wrap,and are covered over with a poly a cloch,quite unbothered by the frosts,

Wait till after the last frost and I don't feed till they start to fruit..

The tumbling toms I sowed in pots on the windowsill last week have now all germinated. Just have to work out where to grow them on in the meantime as I don't have a greenhouse. Didn't quite get around to thinking about that when I decided to do an early sow this year. ;o)

I could really do with getting my toms out into the tunnel they haver done extremely well and are taking over the kitchen!

Mine too - can't even put them out in the g/house during the day for more light. Even in there it's below 10C most days atm
