  • Some potato advice please

Hi - I'm doing more spuds this year than ever before. I picked up a bag each of Lady Crystal and Red Duke of York for earlies and 2 bags of Roosters for mains.
Half of each of the earlies will be going in buckets in the tunnel (hopefully in early february). Everything else will be going in beds outside in mid-March.
So just wondering what people do about chitting large numbers of seed spuds? I know many would do a lot more than my 4 bags. Thing is there's no way I have room in the house to chit them all in good daylight. Appreciate any suggestions on how to plan and proceed.
    Thanks a lot

You don't need strong daylight Redser, it's if they are dark and warm they produce long white sprouts that are no good. Just unpack them so they don't go soft and rot, and spread them out in any sort of light. Keep them frost free but cool.

BTW why are you putting spuds in buckets in a polytunnel, why not in the ground in the tunnel?

Great! Thanks rustylady. I'll be using most of the tunnel beds for toms, peppers, aubs etc. so don't want to risk the rotation. It's only 10 x 20. Otherwise would love to, would be much easier.

So after counting out the spuds I'm going to be hard put to find space to chit them all at once. Is there a way to try stop the roosters/mains sprouting too soon? I'm thinking a dark cool but frost free spot might work? So i'll just chit the earlies for now. Thanks for any advise!

many people dont bother chitting at all and they seem to get good results. so don't bother if you haven't the room
