  • spuds in horse muck

    Hi folks.

I have just built 3 New large raised beds on my allotment and as I have now run out of compost to fill them with I have used rotting horse muck
I was wondering if it will be ok to plant spuds directly into the muck when Iplant my spuds out later in the year
    Cheers

I grew all my veg last year in deep beds - beefed up with a lot of manure. The spuds did have scab on them mind, so I guess the manure I had was on the acidic side (few bits of straw/shavings, though majority was rich dark brown & crumbly).

As long as it's well rotted it'll be fine.

edit: if you get scab, you can always peel them anyway

I thought it was lime that caused scab on potatoes?

I could be wrong, Sheneval - I heard it from one of the other plot holders.. (he was moaning about it when we were both digging up our spuds)

Can't be bothered to look it up either

Cheers Guys I haven't any proper soil so will have to see how they go this year....
Hopefully by the time I am planting out I will have some rotted in the compost heap
            Cheers .... John

I filled my beds with well rotted horse manure last year & the tatties were fine.

Scab can be caused by a number of things but lime is probably the major cause. It just seemed to be more prevalent last year due, no doubt to the weather, and even the commercial growers had a lot more of it than usual.

As an aside, I have the same problem for the spuds I want to plant in large pots. Ie have lots of flakey rotted manure but bugger all compost. Do you reckon it would be ok to use just muck for planting in and earthing up? Ta

I didn't use anything but rotted manure red & they were fine.
