  • Chitting seed potatoes

I have some seed potatoes and wondered can I chit them in an unheated greenhouse?

I also have some onion sets and wondered where the bet place to store them would be until planting time? Dark shed, light greenhouse, inside?

Please be gentle, very new to this so apologise if I am asking stupid questions.

Indoors, but cool. I chit my potatoes on the bathroom windowsill.

Similar for onion sets, cool but light. Things tend to grow long soft useless shoots if kept dark and warm.

By the way, we have a saying here on the Vine "No question is a stupid question"

An unheated greenhouse will not be suitable if inside temp falls below freezing. Its a cool spare bedroom window sill for mine.

I concur with above, if you have heat in your greenhouse then frost won't attack the tubers, but when it's unheated then you are best to have them inside. Mine are in eggboxes on my dining table. Everybody is used to January windowsills of seeds and tables of tubers
Pop your onion sets in your house, somewhere cool. I assume they are sets for summer onions?
Welcome by the way and as RL says, no question is a stupid one Gawd knows, I've asked plenty.

Dear Happygirlie - I agree with advice given thus far - and PLEASE don't think any question is a 'stupid question' - we are all still learning - If you don't know something, just ask - that's what this forum is all about.

Thank you all for the advice and what a friendly bunch you all are

I will take your advice, can't wait to see my daughters face next week when she is home from uni for the weekend because her bedroom will be full of 'chitting' potatoes. Still it can't look any worse than her uni room so maybe she won't notice.

I left my newly purchased seed potatoes in the car last night. It was frosty out. Will they be ok?

If you take them in to the house and they turn soft, I fear they will have been frosted and you should get replacements

If they were covered, they should be ok. Even a single covering of fleece will protect by a couple of degrees soa couple of thick coats should have done the trick

Well Bigmally, not exactly chitting tatties but she is in halls and judging by my last visit they appear to be cultivating bacteria and collecting empty toilet roll tubes ( around 50 arranged in a sort of pyramid style in the corner of the bathroom)!

It seems to be a popular hobby, I'd rather grow seeds in 'em myself.......
