  • Update on my windowsill dwarf tomatoes

Hi everyone, last summer I posted a thread asking questions about growing dwarf tomatoes over the winter. Just want to update on the progress in case anyone is interested in doing this.

I sowed 4 varieties: Red Robin, Minibel, Tiny Tim, and Orangenie (I've never heard of this variety before and found very limited info on the web).

Seeds were sown in mid September and were kept inside a blowaway greenhouse. They were brought inside around late November when they were at their full height of 25-30cm. With the exception of Orangenie, all the tomatoes had aphid problems and struggled to fruit despite developing many flowers. Tiny Tim had some sort of black mold on its leaves but foliage appear to be very healthy. One of the Red Robin plants failed to develop any fruit, its blossoms dropped, and the foliage turned yellow from aphid infestation. Minibel has the most bushy growth and appears to be slowly developing fruit.

The only variety with fruit that appears to be turning colour is Orangenie. It looks the healthiest and is the most vigorous with no aphid issues. I will certainly be growing this variety again next winter. Really looking forward to tasting the ripening fruit

Below are pictures taken this morning:

Shame your toms have had problems with aphids, they are quite troublesome when they get a hold. Your Orangenie looks great, won't be long now
I've got some little tom plants growing inside too, lots of fun

I've got a bit of a mixture on the go, mostly crosses which haven't really got names I'm afraid. The smallest one is a Micro Blue which is a really cute small plant, I've had quite a few fruits off that and looks quite a few more on it. I've also had some ok pink ones and about 6 gorgeous green when ripe fruits. Another sort with a couple of fruit just turning colour I think will be a white/pale yellow fruit. I'll try and post a picture as it's hard to explain.

Let us know how your Orangenie tastes

Glad to hear your micro toms tasted nice, darcy!

Poly, I'm amazed to hear about the varieties you're describing. A micro blue sounds so exciting and I just love the look of GWR tomatoes! Did you cross them yourself? I hope you can take a pic

Darcyvuqua, I loved growing Micro Tom too although I wasn't struck by their flavour. I found Micro Gemma a bit tastier, it's yellow fruited and looks good alongside Micro Tom. If you fancy some seeds let me know.

Here's a piccy of the GWR tomato, I picked these a little while back, they were quite a dark green, looked very pretty. Lovely sweet fruity tasty and really juicy. Skin was a little tough but more than made up in taste. I'll try and do some more tomorrow once I've found my charger!

Please Poly, what does GWR stand for - as to me it can only be Great Western Railway

Oh dear, back to being a nameless GWR. I was thinking along the lines of it being the opposite of the name but I guess a bit daft
