  • what beans/peas to try

Last year my father in law gave me some beans/peas, I think they were peas but he cant remember.

My daughter liked them as she could eat them straight after picking them. They were sweet but of left on too long were hard and nutty. They were good a climbing and went to about 4ft

Can anyone help as I am looking to grow them myself this time.

The peas I am trying this year are Sugarbon Sugarsnap, Kelvedon Wonder, Runner Bean Scarlet Emperor, French Bean Blue Lake and Borlotti.

I don't think you would eat beans straight from the pod whereas raw peas are sweet and irrestible. As to which peas you grew - there are so many!! Were the pods flat or round? What colour were the flowers?

This year I'm growing Hatif D'Antonnay early dwarf peas, and Telephone peas & Champion of England as two maincrops. Also growing Asparagus peas as a novelty variety. The two chosen maincrops grow to ~8ft tall, and produce tonnes of peas each - very high yielding varieties.

Quite clearly these were peas, and the climbing varieties are much neglected. Try Alderman (5ft) or the French Roi des Conserves. In dwarf varieties I find Petit Provencal the best I grow for a podding variety. If you want the 'creme de la creme' of climbing beans, the variety Fortex, a long stringless bean which grows up to 25 cm long is absolutely superb. You can get the seed from Graines Baumaux but it's very expensive, though once you have it you an easily save your own seed for future years.

Andy, just in case newbies are confused: those are beans, not peas

I only do beans, no room for peas. I am growing the old favourite Scarlet Emperor for my neighbour in her garden (enough to share), in my garden, Blue Lake and Bridgwater climbing beans and in our community garden polytunnels I'm doing Bridgewater in one tunnel and trying Cherokee Trail of Tears in the other. (All the produce from the tunnels go to a veg-box scheme to help fund the community project)
