Anthracite coal ash

Hi,

Does anyone know if it's OK to use anthracite coal ashes in my vegetable garden? I've tired looking it up on the internet but I'm not really any the wiser. We started our fire in September so we have a lot of ash to get rid of! Not sure if I can put it in the garden or if I need to start bagging it up to put out with the rubbish.

Although anthracite is 'better' than normal coal it is still coal and will contain heavy metal traces and other dubious materials. Although the volatile toxic material will have been burned off I personally wouldn't use it when there are plenty of alternatives available.

I wouldn't at all and I burn anthracite too. Years ago "clinker" was used as a base for pathways and roads. Maybe if you need some pathways I would say yes, if not no.

I put it on paths but not on growing areas.

Soot and ashes, added over many decades, have made my garden soil a lot different/easier to work than the allotment soil, and seems to have done no harm..........it certainly warms up a lot quicker in the spring - everything grows well
