Asparagus.... How to get rid?

Morning all.

I have issues........ no not those sort, the Git moved out!

I have asparagus issues.....

I have a 2m x 2m bed, its about 7 (ish) years old and I want rid.

It is an old variety and the spears are very bitter, I have tried allsorts over the last few years but still not very edible. I have planted some more to replace it.

On top of that it is in the most stoopid place, practically int middle of plot!

I have tried digging it up with a fork....... thank goodness the fork has life time guarantee!!!

Any tip/'elp?

Can't help with your problem Munch but instead I just wanted to say Hello

if it only a 6 x 6 square i would be tempted to cover it with a tarpaulin and grow something in pots on top,tatties or beans so you get something from that area,you might get a halfway decent summer down there,so even toms or a big pot with a melon,they grow up here in the greenhouse,so you should be okay,and you wouldnt believe the difference in the taste,you wouldnt choose the shop bought ones.you might have to cover a second time,but that would be the death of it,2 years with no light,i would the plant runner/french beans to make the most of all that goodness locked into that area and then you will be able to reorganise to your liking...good luck..

Out of interest, what variety it is that you have got and want rid of?

Normally, I'd suggest you soak the ground to make it easier to dig, However, I can't imagine anyone having a plot that's too dry at present!

I'd go with what BUFFS said, the only thing else I'd do is cover the asparagus with a thick layer of muck/compost first, then cardboard, then the tarp/damp-proof membrane/pond-liner. That way, after the first year, you could plant squashes/pumpkins through the cover and make use of the ground. Then uncover and dig it over after that?
