    • Cucamelons

Hi there, im a newbie Ive started all my plants from seed and have had great success so far but ive been waiting AGES for Cucamelon seeds to germinate, has anyone had any experience with them? Ive had them in the airing cupboard, the growhouse when the weather was hot and now ive got them back in the living room as its a bit chilly in the grow house. they've been in soil for over 2 weeks now. Any advice appreciated

            • Because of this controversy I have been keeping a sharp eye on my Suttons seed order.

All my seeds were Suttons own and I can say there were no shortages whatsoever. I opened my last packet to day courgettes, average contents 20 seeds, actual contents 26 seeds. My Sungold were 1 up and my cumbers exact.

The shortage problem seems specific to Mr Wong.

yes I have got three cucamelon plants growing away at the mo.... Of the Wong seeds I tried, these were best of the bunch for germinating...
..their stems are so thin tho....

                • Just in case you miss it on the other thread...

I got my cucamelons germinated pretty quickly and they are growing away at the mo... I would have a dig around in one to see if anyrthing is happening and make sure the compost is moist and has not dried out friom being in the airing cupboard...

Prob best to keep in airing cupboard and keep moist until they germinate...worked for me anyways..

                  • Oh bother. I've just ordered cucamelons and asparagus peas without actually noticing they are James Wong. I was going to ask if people have grown either of these things before.

Oh well, if I get any cucamelons to germinate I am thinking of trying 4 plants - one in greenhouse, one in pot in garden, one in polytunnel at plot and one outdoors in ground at the allotment to see which conditions it prefers.

                      • My wife purchased several of the James Wong seeds as she has decided that as i now have an allotment she is going to take over the garden at home and grow 'pretty flowers'.

(what she really means is that I am going to build a raised bed for her, plant it up and tend it as well while she watches and supervises)

Last Monday I sowed several of the Wong range for her - Dahlia yams, cucamelon, Musk Melon, Japanese Beefsteak, Electric Daisies and Eucalyptus.

They were all sowed into an unheated propogator and placed in an unheated conservatory.

As of just now there are two Dahlias showing but nothing else.

I did notice that although the packet for musk melons stated that it contained 12 seeds I only had 8.

I wasn't going to do anything, but after reading that everyone is having similar problems I think i will have to get onto Suttons and let them know that I am less than pleased.

If they get enough complaints hopefully things will change, but if we don't complain they will never know what is happening, and at the end of the day it is their reputation and James Wong's on the line, not their packing company where the problem ultimately lies.

                        • Ok, I have just emailed Suttons to express my disappointment with the lack of seeds in the JW packets.

I have advised them that I will be posting their reply on this forum, so lets see how they respond.

                          • I've made a little progress, sowed quite a few quinoa in a pot last week and one of them has just appeared today Fingers crossed at least some of the others will follow suit.

                              • I've just sown Cucamelons, Edible Dahlias, Queensland Arrowroot and Lemon Eucalyptus - none of these are James Wong seeds but are sold by "him". My seeds came from Real Seeds and Pennards. I'll let you know whether they germinate
