  • Caigua, Mouse Melon, Okahijiki

I bought recently seeds of caigua, mouse melon and okahijiki. I planted them a week ago and caigua has already germinated. Anybody tried/tries to grow them as well?

Achocha, melothrie and salsoa. Grown the first two.

Achocha goes mad, melothrie doesn't. But far too early to sow them. Another 4-6 weeks.

I only planted few to check germination rates and hopefully will put them out in a cold frame.

Grown achocha and salsola. Achocha would germinate if u dropped it on the kitchen floor and forgot about it. Despite being rampant I grow successfully trained up and across roof of greenhouse. Always best crop. Pick when small otherwise have to pick seeds out. Salsola is awesome but I've ran out of seed as best bought each year, seed doesn't last long. Found it slow (2 weeks plus to germinate) I think it's like samphire - just thinner, but salty. only never caught on! I just used to nibble on it whilst pottering. Growing mouse melons / melotherie first time this year - and also rare shark fin melon billed as rampant and easy to crop! Will trymluse melon I doors and out - gamble as in Northumberland.

Real Seeds sell them under the names that Zaz uses. I'm growing them this year too. Tried Achocha last year but I was a bit late and they didn't fruit. I sowed Achocha and Melothrie yesterday

I got mine from realseeds mainly to boycott certain botanist who has teamed up with a commercial grower rhyming with mutton and trying to persuade us these things are new and never been available b4 and charging silly prices for very few seeds. Alyssum fowler and Marc Diaconi have championed these unusual veg (and written about most of them for years b4). Nothing against the man but I'd rather support mark's own nursery otter farm or real seeds. Sorry - rant over. I got mine from real seeds - however, if u private message address happy to send u few seeds of each to try as real seeds verygenerous!!
