I'm hoping to grow some decent carrots this year - last year they grew directly in the veggie bed, and I ended up with weird multi-legged things. So, not one to do things by halves, I've built proper carrot beds and filled them with two tonnes of sharp sand, both for long and stump rooted carrots. I'll be using a mix recommended online by a champion grower, so I can't personally attest to it's effectiveness but it seems to work for him. Also following the advice of Terry Walton given on GQT last week for the chitting of the seeds, so we shall see if that works!

      Mix -
2 gallons finely sieved compost (I use Jack's Magic)
      0.5 gallons silver sand
      0.5 gallons vermiculite
      1oz Superphosphate
      1oz Sulphate of Potash
      1oz calcified seaweed
      1oz Kieserite

Terry Walton's advice was as follows -

Chit seeds in damp kitchen towel in a tupperware box.
Once rootlets appear, plant three seeds into peat pots filled with mix.
Allow to grow on for a couple of weeks, cut base out of the pot and plant directly into growing hole.
      Thin as required.

I'll be trying all of the above this year, both for show veg and also table veg. Over 200 bores done so far, I'm knackered!

Sure he was talking about carrots......advice here seems that chitting is impossible due to tap root growth?

        What's a gallon?

        Loving my allotment!

          Just revisiting this thread!!
For new readers, AP's sooper dooper carrot mix recipe is at http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ots_70399.html
For me, its confession time as I never did open those bags of sand and, would you believe it, they were used for building stuff
However, there may be half a big dumpy bag of sand leftover once the GH is finished (as its cheaper to buy a big bag than lots of little bags). Maybe I will be able to grow the perfect carrot after all
