  • Bad Planning On My Part.

In the photo you can see a bed with a low hinged debris cage on it, it is 8' x 2'6". Last year I had strawbs in it but because it runs east/west, my neighbours shed cast a shadow on the bed & wasn't very productive. I'm toying around with using it as a carrot bed this year but am unsure as to whether they mind some shade. As always, advice greatly appreciated.

I would give it a go matey. They will get some sunshine during the day and unlike the straws, they won't need sunshine to ripen.

Cheers AP, It's a dead bed so like you I thought I would give it a go. I also found this which may be useful for other grapes facing a similar problem.

Haven't read your link but what about lettuces (I know how much you like them) and other salad leaf veg as they don't mind the shade?

Thanks VC, that could be an option.

I grow calabrese and spring cabbbage in a well shaded bed and have never had any probs, but you might have to lift your netting.

I've grown chard in shade during part of the day fine too. Or if you wanted some natural fertiliser - what about comfrey? I have that in total shade, sun, partial shade, dappled shade - it grows everywhere fine

Our federation rep seems to think moving a shed because it's shading another plot is fair.

I was thinking of asking him AD as he is a nice lad & only comes to his plot about once a month with his wife & toddler. Nothing to lose I guess.
