  • Cabbage plantlets

I left some of last years red cabbage stalks in the ground and now they have several young plantlets on them about 10" long looking nice and healthy. Does anybody else do this and if so, do you leave them on the stalks or do you cut them off and pot them up?

I cut all cabbages rather than pull them. If you cut a cross in the bit of stalk you can get 4 cabbages free - smaller than the original but free is free! I'd just harvest these young plants - I don't think there's much milage in potting up. Try it and let us all know - interesting experiment.

Just thought I'd let you know how the experiment went. I potted up a few, then planted them out and others I left on the stalks. The ones I planted out only grew as large as the ones left on the stems, so you were right Flummery, waste of time, but at least now I know.

No point in potting them up, just cut them and use them as tender young greens/reds.
