    Couldn't get it to germinate at all well last year ...and those that did were pathetic whereas my neighbours were fantastic. I sow one to a loo roll middle which gives plenty of depth for the roots and as soon as they germinate they go somewhere cooler ....

      Depends what your attitude is to 'living energy'. Seeds are alive aren't they? When you germinate more than one together it helps them, but then once growing they compete. The weaker one(s) you pull out donate their energy to the compost heap. This supports all the other reasons and evidence given for sowing more than one per space, with anything except the most costly hybrid seeds. Gardening tradition gives us what works best, based on many years of experience!
