You could put icing sugar on top of the cardboard, or fake eyelashes. It's lack of light that causes the plant to weaken, because it can't photosynthesise

I think the point TwoSheds was trying to make was that whatever you put on top of the cardboard won't make any difference. It's the thick cardboard that stops the light getting to the couch grass.
