some years are warm some years some are cold it goes usually by 20-30 years cycles that is why if ask your grand parents it was so cold in winter when they were growing up.
You guys just grew up during a warm cycle and thought warm was the normal way.
the secret to good veg growing is being ready for a hot, cold, wet, dry or in between.

It like driving to work and finding out the main route has major crash, the smart driver knows to leave earlier and have an alternate route to get work on time. Garden is the same plan for both cold or hot you will be correct with one cropping plan.

Well at last things are kicking off.

In the GH my first pot of radish are through as are my calabrese and spuds in buckets and for the first time it is easier to count the peas that have germinated rather than those that have not.

Absolutely right there, not exactly 20 or 30 years of course, but that's why 1947 and 1963 had those winters where trains got buried in snowdrifts and airlifts of fodder were needed; it was the same Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) that is active just now. In theory we should have a scorcher of a summer afterwards, but I'd bet it won't happen - or broken up into chunks, with lots of wet in between. At a guess, late summer/autumn will be hot.
The way air holds heat has changed in the last few decades; this is why snow does not lie so long, and temperatures do not drop so low as they used to in very snowy winters.
There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.

Definitely felt like spring here in Essex today. Shirt-sleeve gardening! Also I saw my first butterflies of the year while on the allotment: a comma and a brimstone. Won't be long now before the orange-tips emerge - my favourite butterfly and always a sign that winter is definitely over for the year.
