  • Storing asparagus crowns

Does anyone have any good tips on the best way to store asparagus crowns until the weather improves. I have just received mine during a snow storm.
Due to recent freezing conditions, the beds aren't ready as the soil was too frozen to dig and I had hoped that my order would be delayed until the weather improved but no such luck.
Btw I have 40 crowns of 4 different varieties which I would like to keep separate, and only one bucket without drainage holes in it.

I assume you have 10 crowns of each variety. If so then I'd take a bundle of 10 and put them into some moist (not wet) compost in a pot / tray / whatever you have and leave it in a shed or garage (somewhere cool) until you can plant out. Basically you need to ensure that they don't dry out (you don't need much compost) but don't sweat / rot - they MIGHT be OK just left in their packaging (they are surprisingly resilient) but I'd want to look after them a bit as they're not cheap. Out of interest, who is sending them out in freezing conditions?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks Alison, I'll do that. They are from T&M. I was surprised they arrived as I'm still waiting for my seed spuds which really ought to be chitting now.
