I think people who use that naked posterior option have insecurities.....

I would think that those without insecurities (and possibly those who could do WITH a few insecurities) are more likely to be doing that posterior type thing!

Altho since I have no near neighbours, (and the fruit forest is out the back of the house) unless I can hear dirt bikes on the fire trail I COULD use that method.
But will continure to restrain myself to gardening in my pajamas, just because I can.

Some days it's hardly worth chewing through the restraints!

I certainly do not feel that particular Challenge coming on - we have 76 allotment holders at the Hill, and my plot is pretty much by the front gate.....

        That's what I use.

So far, the groundsel, speedwell and pink dead nettle is all that's up and growing (it's actually in flower).

PS. I have a £5 soil thermometer, it's in the dog poo compost bin at present, and isn't getting any warmer than 10c (it's 2c outside the bin).

For forget-me-nots it might just be right for them. Doesn't mean the veggies and flowers we decide to plant are as tough as them!

We had a white frost this morning but I noticed the plantago major (plantians) just starting to spring into growth on the fields!

I know exactly what the soil temperature is in my vicinity because my firm pays good money to get daily Met Ofice weather forcasts of ground temperature throughout each day!
This is to do with the 'snow and ice' policy we've adopted so that we can apply rocksalt or draft in labour if required.

At present we are on an amber alert and the soil temp will vary between 1.1 & 16.2 depending on the time of day at ground level!

Between 1.1 & 16.2? Well with that level of pin point accuracy you can see that that is money well spent!

Metcheck used to do a soil temp forecast in the gardening section but seem to have discontinued it since their revamp

I've got a soil thermometer but very rarely use it, you can just tell when it's time really, if you consult your common sense as opposed to listening to the little impatient devil clamouring to get going

100 potatoes are in. Under 6 inches of soil, 4-6 inches of mulch, and covered with enviromesh/fleece.

Trying to keep them shaded, it's far too hot for the poor things.

To be honest because of my work I have a good selection of thermometers with about 15 different probes.

I have never used one in the garden except to check my Hi-Lo when it was new.

I much prefer Zaz's method, if weeds are growing its time for some of the hardier stuff, and when you can cast a clout its time for the rest.

Completely forgot to take temperature! Tomorrow maybe!
Was a bit chilly when the sun wasn't out fully but lovely otherwise!

I suppose we go by the rule..."if it's too wet to walk on and dig out the weeds" ( yeh I know - we don't always cover our soil in the autumn)...then we can't get the spuds in anyway!

Our soil is stillsticking to the fork/spade- so it's too early for us!

Last year we got them in at the very beginning of May- and they still did really well- even if they were all rubbery when planted out

We've not even bought ours yet!,...no hurry as far as we are concerned!
