      Proving this point - I've just been given another small area near my plot, and I was digging it today - and unearthed some nice, eatable potatoes - enough to fill a builder's bucket. I'm well chuffed

        Like AP says soil is a very good insulator, regulations require a water service to be at least 2ft underground to prevent them freezing. Which they never do.
