  • Grow cage

Just wondering if anyone has use a Grow Cage for their brassicas last year I used canes and hoops along with debris netting but this is taller and would look a bit tidier in the back garden.

Greentree Quick And Easy Grow Cage - 2.4m - Greentree - Gardening - Growing - Grow Your Own - Crop Protection - Charlies Direct

If I did buy the cage I'd still use my debris netting plus I've seen it cheaper local.
    Location....East Midlands.

mmmm im a bit sceptical when it comes to things like that. I brought one similar with metal poles and build-a-balls costing over £100 and it failed under snow and everything bent and during the summer it was a nightmare to get the poles in and also when it was very wind and wet the poles used to fall down. I personally am looking at the idea of using MDPE pipe making big hoops and putting a net over top of them to see if i can make a cage.

It looks good but not sure how stable it would be and how long it would last.

Whilst not expensive, wouldn't it be cheaper to buy som canes, netting and flexaballs from the local gc?

We picked up canes from poundland which are 1.2m long yesterday and 8ft canes from gc around a month ago which were about 3 quid for 8, so 4 quid covers the frame, flexaballs are about 6 quid or thereabouts for 10, so unless netting is extortionate down your way...
Quanti canicula ille in fenestra ?

          Thanks for the input

Just shown it to Mr Pots and he reckons the clips aren't up to much either so I'll use last years system but using taller canes this time plus my usual metal hoops that are covered with hose pipe.

How high are you going to make it Bren? I grew Black Tuscan last year and had to take my netting off when the kale was pressing on the top, which was about 2ft 6" high.
I need something taller but I don't know if I could self-build anything taller without it being rickety, I don't have room (or skill) for major 4 x 4 type cage construction.

                  Endless wonder.

Can you get metal rods (rebar perhaps?) from a building supply place? Then you can bang that into the ground and put your pipes on top. It's what I'm intending to do, I think they sell the stuff in 9' lengths and I was intending to cut it down to size. My problem was working out how to make it cost effective because I'd end up needing to get it delivered, but if you're on an allotment perhaps you can get together with some other people and buy some. Or perhaps you're lucky and know someone with a truck or trailer or something bigger than a hatchback who could transport it for you.

.........and when you have no brassicas in it you can put your chickens in it to fertilise the soil and get rid of creepy crawlies!

I used canes and some old tennis balls last years and that worked quite well, admittedly no snow.
