  • Lark versus Lollipop

Hi. I have recently sown some sweetcorn (bravely).
I was just wondering how far apart on the plot these two types of sweetcorn should be from one another to avoid cross pollination? We have a half plot, so all being well, there should be maybe 10-20ft between the two.Dependent on which way the wind blows... *sigh*
Also, what flavour ( keeping everything crossed for a good summer) and yields should I expect? Sown twelve of each type to block plant.
Any tips and previous stories welcomed.

Lark you don't have to worry about cross pollination from other species but the Lollipop I am not so sure about. Lark is a tendersweet so should be very sweet if you get it to the pot fast enough and literally eatable right off the plant without cooking if your really that way inclined.
I am sure someone will chime in shortly on the Lollipop.

Flavour depends on variety and I've not tried either but from previous experience if you pick and cook within an hour the flavour is not comparable to supermarket corn.

You can get 1 - 2 cobs per plant usually. Hand pollination is advisable in my experience.

Corn needs to be separated by 100 feet to prevent cross pollenation.
Cross pollenation does effect taste in corn.
there three type sweet corn su,se,sh2 am not sure which type the varities you listed are. But they are all the same species but different types.
the effect of cross pollention between the types varies between between the types being crossed. It does have an effect on taste during the current season.

I've just goggled and can't find any mention of a sweetcorn variety 'Lollipop'? Where did you buy them?

SarzWix, it's a mini version (like those you would use in stir fries) I think I bought them from B&Q.

Aah. A 'Minipop' type. Well those are harvested before they're pollinated, so if you wanted to keep your other variety pure, you could just snap off the flowers on the top of the mini type.
