  • butternut squash enquiry

Hi all - I am new to this forum lark, forgive any etiquette bloomers.

In the past I have grown butternut squash quite successfully in terms of yield, but unfortunately the texture of my squashes was slightly floury rather than what I expected from my experience of shop bought ones. Does anyone have any idea why this is or has had the same problem?

    Drought?

I bought a mealy, dry butternut this year, it was horrible. The ones I grow are never mealy, but then I do give them a lot of water, because they're thirsty plants

Thanks for the tip, do you think that applies even though my squashes showed no sign of thirst? Do you water them as a matter of course, or only when they start to wilt. Perhaps I should treat them as I do the outdoor tomatoes.

I treat them like tomatoes. Thirsty.

I don't water anything else that well: other stuff only gets watered when it wilts. I'm guessing it is thirst what done it, because the floury texture reminds me of radishes when they've been grown without water: fluffy inside, horrible
