I have phacelia self-sowing EVERYWHERE. I love it, it's brilliant. It dies back in the winter and comes up again in the spring from seeds (it's annual, not perennial).

I only pull it up if I'm needing the space for a crop, and then it gets chopped n dropped onto the soil, as a One Straw mulch

The only reason that I would be cautious about this plan is that I've read that asparagus dislikes any sort of competition from weeds - there's a great play made about careful bed prep.

As this is year 3 for my asparagus bed and I'm FINALLY going to get to eat some of it AT LONG LAST, I'd be wary of the tiniest little thing that might - just might - jeopardise the crop.

I have a pack of phacelia in my coat - I'll be chucking it about the plot on the way home from work. After glowing references like that from Two_Sheds above, I think I'd be mad not to!
