I am a complete noob at gardening, I've just moved into my first place with a garden and was keen to get going with my own veggies.

So I decided to start with Tomatoes and thought how great it would be to grow from seed. Seeds arrived, popped into propagator and then moved on to individual pots.
    All going well so far.

    And then....this is happening!
What am I doing wrong? Too much water? Not enough??
If the photos don't show it properly the stems are narrowing from the soil upwards!

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance

Arrh that looks very sad especially the second one.

Looks like too much water, I think beginner tend to over water a lot and kill them
with care, I would guess the plants actually drown, I think the roots need a to be able to breathe a bit, maybe that is why one tried to grow along the surface as it was too wet below. It's much harder to kill by under-watering IMO, they will wilt first, but when you water they will recover again. No more then slightly damp is best.
