VC - you are infectious. Instead of cabbages this year we have started 2 varieties of kale, dwarf green and russian red (Ta for the VSP). I really hope I don't become addicted to all and sundry like.....

I've really enjoyed reading this thread....

I'm a kale fan. Even when I just had pots and odd corners I usually grew some. Looking forward to hopefully getting some in the plot this year.

But WHY has no-one mentioned kale-slaw? Much nicer and prettier than coleslaw... ;-)

I prefer Kale to Cabbage - easier to grow for a start - at least in my experience
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
              Pumpkin pi.

When I've tried to grow cabbages they've come out like kale anyway - might as well grow kale and count myself a success.

I grew a couple of kale plants last year, intending to see if we liked eating them. It was hopeless - didn't get a single usable leaf. As each leaf developed it would drop off. By the end of winter the plants were sticks 2 feet tall or so with a very few small, dying leaves clustered at the top.

I grew them under debris netting alongside some PSB. The PSB wasn't great because of a bad infestation of cabbage aphids but at least the PSB produced a crop.

I'm having one more go this year. I've added some lime to the ground this time, but if anybody has any suggestions before I harden off the young plants and set them out, I'd be very grateful.

Update on the kales sown in 2013.

Two of the kales in the experimental kale bed haven't flowered, nor did they flower last year. However, they are sending out side shoots and you can guess what I'm going to do next

                    You can't???

                        UPDATE
All sown 5th May. Ones in RED either didn't germinate or have died
Maybe just as well as there are about 26 different Kales and Kaley things to plant out - somewhere
