  • Megabloom on tomato plant: leave it or pinch it?

I have one of those extra large fused blooms on my Black from Tula plant and was wondering if I should pinch it out. The plant is about 35cm tall and will be planted in its final pot in a couple of weeks.

Personally I would pinch it out.

If you have other plants at the same stage, you could leave it for a mega-tomato, but if you're relying on it for early crops then pinch it out because it will put a lot of energy into that one at the expense of the rest of the truss.

I would leave it alone. Even if it gives a large tomato or not you will get the next set of tomatoes at same time.

i would pinch it out as if you do get a mega tom then you will have to support it somehow, unless it was already a beefsteak, then the result would be interesting...

Thanks for your inputs, everyone. I think I'll pinch it as it is the only large black tomato that I'm growing this season so yield will have to trump novelty. Has anyone actually left a megabloom to grow on and did it substantially affect the growth of the whole plant?

I grew some Raf tomatoes last year. A Spanish variety - large and very tasty! Most of the plants had a 'megabloom', which I'd never seen before. I left them and they turned into a very large, double tomato. They ripened and were fine to eat, apart from a hard core. This year's plants are already showing these large flowers, which are ready to open. I'm going to pinch someosome them out and leave the others. We shall see...

Unless your trying for a huge tomato I'd pinch it out. Tomatoes from mega blooms are usually gnarly and horrible looking

I always leave megablooms. I can't say that I've noticed any impact upon the rest of the plant. As I understand it they're formed when its cold (so some cultivars are more susceptible) the later trusses don't have them.

I also find that the tomatoes on megablooms have more flesh. Which is what you grow tomatoes for.
