  • germinating lettuce in paper towels?

Had anyone done this? I found some little gem seeds and decided to stick them in some paper towels as I was potting some other veg. Its probably not a good idea as transplanting would be a nightmare.

I would be terrified as lettuce seed is tiny!

If you have the patience and some tweezers then great :-) I haven't had trouble with them germinating though

I dont suppose you know the ideal depth for lettuce to grow and I might stick them in cells and in a plastic gh?

I sow a couple of seeds to a module for lettuce. Although small you can easily separate the seeds when dry. I do 6 modules every couple of weeks and it works well. The seeds are cheap and easy to germinate

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I do this all the time, by making kitchen roll seed tapes with my students. As soon as you see germination, pop the strips onto a seed tray half full of compost and cover with a little compost and they grow through.

Then when larger, you can separate and pot on or plant out.

Some can go straight into growing positions when you see germination.

The "rule of thumb" when planting seeds is to cover them with the same depth of soil. So if your seed is 1cm wide, you put 1cm of soil on top of it
