I am planning on building some Hugelkultur mounds this spring. I have various logs from oak for structure to dried willow and soft silver birch, bags of fresh manure and old turf. I even have a 14 year old son who is kean to earn extra pocket money
I am planning to build the mounds in an area with heavy clay with the first layer of logs slightly below ground level to help reduce water logging/allow water to rise in mounds.
From what I have read it seems the mounds are a bit warmer in the first year due to decomposing so I am wondering what to plan for planting. I am wondering about some or all of the following:
Melon Outdoor Wonder
Aubergines
Peppers
Squash/courgettes
and I am going to reserve one mound to try and grow some big pumpkins.
I could really do with some practical advice on what to grow first and second years.
