They were in cardboard pots - i didn't puddle them in, never heard of that, but i'll do it with the next lot, which are due to go in soon. I planted them inside tin cans as well, as i read this could deter slugs?

Sounds to me as if the roots are still constricted inside the cardboard pots which have probably dried out.

Never heard of planting in tin cans - I presume you mean taking the top and bottom off the can to make a cylindrical collar.

Yes, with about an inch poking above the ground - i don't know if it works, but apparently the metal gives the slugs a 'toxic shock'. I actually removed the soggy cardboard from the rootballs before i planted them in, so it can't be that. The ground wasn't dug over, i just chopped down the weeds and cardboarded it over winter, and added some manure and the weed membrane over that a few months back - my attempt at the no dig approach. Maybe the roots are struggling to make headway in the heavy soil underneath?

I must say a few of my hardened off peas in the ground are doing the same and it is seemingly random as they were watered the same, same row etc.

I plant all my transplants that way. Otherwise they dry out.

If you water the soil AFTER planting, you're going to lose a lot of it to evaporation, and you will germinate all the weed seeds in the vicinity.
By puddling in, and then covering with dry soil (dry soil is a mulch, in effect) you are trapping the water in the soil, where it should be.

I never, ever water the soil surface: it also encourages roots to stay near the surface, where they are prone to drying out, so you have to water more. Rod for your own back, it is

I shouldn't think that's helping them, and I wouldn't want rusting metal in the soil

The whole point of cardboard pots is that you plant the whole thing, you don't remove it. It degrades in the soil, adding humus.
Don't leave any cardboard tube sticking up out of the soil, as that will cause dryness (by wicking)

I'm still a learner! Hopefully they'll recover, and the next lot will do better...
