wilting/yellow crusty leaves on beans

Ive got some runners I put out in the ground on friday and they look ok but one or two look a bit wilty with some yellowing leaves. I have watered well yesterday and wondered if it was due to dry soil?

You're very early to be planting runners out.

I would think the wind has damaged them. Did you harden them off?

They have been out in an unheated GH for 3 weeks. I might pop a fleece over them then

I'm further south than you and don't think about planting out until third week of May or first week of June. I noticed someone at the allotments had put some out last weekend. They matched your description. Still time to sow some more seed.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but i've noticed the same thing happening to my broad bean plants - they've been overwintered outside, so they should be tough enough, but in the last couple of weeks they've started going yellow and a few have died. Could the wind do that? It has been very very windy....

We reckon the wind was scorching the rhubarb. Either that or someone had been round with weedkiller.

The wind could do that, or being really very dry, or possibly lack of nutrients

When you say yellow, do you mean pale? Are they crispy & dry looking?

My broadies are looking sick also. Some you win, some you lose.

Wouldn't even dream of sowing, never mind putting outside runners or frenchies around here though!

Parts of my leaves are dry and crispy looking. I looked at the peas in the same soil and it happening to them too.

just checked soil moisture and out of 5 being wet and 1 being dry some of the soil at the same depth by the peas is a 3ish, maybe 2.7 and same goes for the runners apart from the worst looking one where the soil around it at the same depth as the others is at 4, so fairly wet. I had thought of adding a poly cloche over them and leave the soil to dry a bit so its more or less the same all over and then add my micro irrigation system along there but its currently 16/17c outside so dont want to over heat them!

Too early outside for runners yet, I have risked some in the past when I was given some large plants at this time of year and got a good and early crop but that wasn't planned and it was a much warmer year.

They are pale and yellowish-green at the bottom, but not crispy and dry - the leaves higher up still look healthy enough.

I forgot to mention - they are planted through holes in weed suppressing membrane. Maybe they're not getting enough moisture?

What did you raise them in before you planted them out (pots or loo roll inners), and did you puddle them in when you transplanted? Puddling in is digging a hole, filling with water, allowing to drain, popping the plant in the hole and filling with water again. Allow water to drain away and then fill in the hole with soil, gently firming the plant in.
