  • Using old rainwater on fruit and veg

    Hello all

We have recently taken over a plot on our local allotment. It is rather overgrown, but does benefit from some established fruit bushes and a shed. The shed has been used to divert rainwater into an old water tank and a blue barrel both open to the elements.

My question is whether I should use this water.

The water doesn't smell however it has sediment in it (and a few dead snails)
Does the fact that it gets topped up every time it rains make it ok to use. Or is any old rainwater potentially harmful?!?

    Thanks

Unless there was anything noxious in the bottom of the containers (which I doubt) the water should be absolutely fine to use.

You might want to think about rigging up covers for the containers (Elf & Safety) and to keep the mozzies out.

Thanks rustylady that was what I was hoping. It certainly doesn't seem too manky! I was planning to use the water so as to be able to move and cover once empty.

i'd certainly use it on established stuff but would be more cautious using it on seedlings

That's what your future water butts will contain as HM says, fine for established plants.

Seeing as the water from the tap is essentially old rain water with a few additives, I would go for it.

You could always empty it out and clean out the sediment if you are worried

Use the water and when empty clean out the butts with a brush and start again .... There should be lots more rain to come as summer has supposed to have started.

Thank you all for the advice. I will use, clean and set up again with covers.
