  • transplanting onion seedlings....

    Hi guys.

Have been really busy this year and have not kept up with much so now need to catch up in the next few days.

I have got a small seed tray absolutly full of onion seedling that just look like really long thin grass at the moment.

I was going to transfer these into cell trays to try and thicken them up before they go outside but this can be tedious as I have a few so was wondering is there a reason I cant transfer them into an old mushroom crate like I do my leeks and not need to put them into individual cells? I only as as everywhere I have read in the past always say cells.

Also where they are quite long on the top could the foilage be trimmed?

don't get hung up on cell trays or on any other compost holding receptacles. The important thing to do is to plant them on so that they get a fresh supply of nutrients otherwise they will end up stunted. I prefer to use small pots as opposed to cellpaks as it's easier to get them out of a pot when planting out.

You can do what you want, if mushroom crates work for you then use them. I go straight from sowing in a plant pot to outside.

I sowed mine into cell trays. They've been hardened off, so today they're going in the ground

Oh, and I'd avoid trimming the foliage - the leaves on an onion are hollow rather than the flat leaf you get on a leek. I don't think they'd respond the same as a leek does. Although I'm happy to be corrected there; I'm no onion expert

I usually sow in modules and then once ready, it's straight outside with them...
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....
